David Schofield has a fascination with the sea and often uses marine motifs in his work. However, in his own very individual style, these are juxtaposed with unexpected objects or figures. In this way Schofield plays with ideas of reality and imagination. Our ideas of scale and perspective are challenged as we enter a world where the viewer's reality is pitched against a fairy-tale imagination. Llighthouses appear in unlikely places.

Lighthouses are a recurrent theme as symbols of safety within Schofield's paintings. The perception of safety and what constitutes a saviour is explored. On closer inspection the lighthouses are often subverted or challenged by details as in the case of 'All Quiet' where the lighthouse is placed far inland.
